Hello,
Quick question or recommendation.
I find it quite annoying when I am on a call and my phone wishes to tell me (based on its sound set in the system) that it has mail or that a timer is finished. I can see no reason whatsoever that someone needs to have a timer go off while in an active call or to be notified about an email. Can the software not be updated to somehow silence these alarms when in an active call.
Regards
Get help with buttons and switches on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
On an iPhone, the volume buttons and Ring/Silent switch are on the left side of the device. The buttons on other iPhone models are similar.
You will want to use the Ring/Silent switch during calls. You can also enable an alternate feature known as Do Not Disturb which is a quick toggle in your control center.

Set a schedule
If you don't want to be disturbed at a certain time, you can set a schedule. Tap Settings > Do Not Disturb and turn on Scheduled. Then set a time.

Change your settings
You can also choose when you want to be disturbed:
- Allow Calls From: Allow calls from everyone, no one, your favorites, or specific contact groups stored on your device or your iCloud account.
- Repeated Calls: If someone calls you twice within three minutes, the call won't be silenced.
- Silence: Choose to silence calls and notifications always or only when the device is locked.
