    Hey there may_2222,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that you have some questions about updating your Mac to OS X El Capitan. I'd be more than happy to provide you with some information about the update.

We do strongly recommend that you keep your computer up-to-date with the latest version of OS X. The reason for this is that it provides improvements in stability, compatibility, and security for your device. Prior to any update, we suggest that you create a recent backup of your computer. This helps to ensure that your important data is secure prior to making changes to your operating system. Check out this article on how to do that:

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

As for updating your Mac, here is a resource with the steps to accomplish that:

Update the software on your Mac

As the article points out, your Mac can be set up to check for updates automatically. See this section for details:

This resource provides the steps specific to updating to El Capitan:

Upgrade to OS X El Capitan

As far as your questions about how long the update will take, there are a number of factors that come into play. This includes what version of OS X you currently have, your internet connection, internet speed, etc.

If you do run into issues with updating your Mac at home, you could reach out to a local Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store for assistance. Do be aware that services provided by 3rd-party locations can vary. Here's a link to help you find locations near you: https://locate.apple.com/country

    All the best!
