Q: iCal frozen on moving to server accounts

I installed El Capitan (10.11.5) on my iMac (mid-2007) desktop about a week ago. I activated iCloud yesterday; since then, iCal has been frozen while "moving calendar to server accounts." I tried unlinking the calendar and reminders from the iCloud to no avail. Deleted the calendar cache files. Then I deactivated iCloud. With each change, I rebooted. I am STILL getting the message every time I open iCal and can do nothing but force quit out. I backed up the calendar via Time Machine, and I believe there must be a recent version on the Cloud since the information is on my iPhone, so if I have to reinstall Calendar information, that would be fine. Right now, I can't do anything with Calendar on my desktop. Please advise.

    Hello DL T!

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.  Being able to access your iCloud calendars on all your devices is definitely an important part of keeping your life organized!  I will be happy to help in any way I can.

It sounds like you've done some great troubleshooting so far.  Turning off the iCloud options for your calendar was a good start.  Backing up your calendar events is also a great step to take, as is clearing the calendar caches and rebooting the computer.  Are you able to view your calendar events from the iCloud website?  You can use this link to get there:

    iCloud Calendar

If Calendar works fine there, then you're correct thinking the most-recent version is stored in iCloud.  Another helpful step would be to try the Calendar app on your iMac using a test user account.  Instructions for doing that can be found here:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

If the same thing happens in the other user account, try Safe Booting your iMac using the instructions in this document:

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up

Safe Mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening. Knowing how your Calendar app behaves after trying these steps would be very helpful in figuring out what's going on and how to fix the issue.

Have a great rest of your day!
