Q: Leone - Aperture compatibility with El Capitan

Leone or other fellow Aperture Users

Is it possible to have a definitive list of the incompatibilities of Aperture 3.5 running on OS X 10.11 El Capitan?

I am happily running Aperture 3.6 on OS X 10.10.5 and want to know what problems I may encounter and then decide whether to upgrade or not.

I am aware of issues with thumbnails - but what else might be a problem?

Many thanks in advance

Brian

    Folks

In my question above - Aperture 3.6 should have read Aperture 3.5

    Apologies

Brian, we have not yet a complete list:

There is still the problem, that onscreen proofing is not working reliably and can be causing washed out images.

And recently the new problem, that the straighten adjustment is giving unpredictable results, if the Curves adjustment is used at the same time. Any combination with Curves can be problematic.  (This seems to be an old bug - I can reproduce it in Aperture 3.4.5).

See this discussion:   Re: Aperture 3.6 applying corrupted straightening to exported images

    You're welcome

Yes, let's start a collection.  I myself did not notice much difference to the Aperture 3.6 performance when I upgraded to El Capitan.

Is there such a collection? I did not notice much difference either, until today. If I can't get it sorted out soon, I'll be posting a question.

I was assured by the PHOTOS specialist at the local Apple store that El Capitan was completely compatible with Aperture.  NOT SO!  Like an idiot, I upgraded two days ago and now Aperture keeps freezing and freezing and freezing.  Even with something simple as the Crop tool.  Why did Apple do this to us?  Such a GREAT app and they dumped it for the iPhone mass market "Photos"  *****.  Now what do I use?k

It may be a problem with other incompatible software you installed, or your library needs repairing, perhaps corrupted photos in the library.

    Have you tried any trouble-shooting?

Does Aperture also freeze, if you launch it withe the Shift key held down?  That will prevent the backgorund processing of previews,

No other software installed for ages and none since 'upgrading' to El Capitan.

Yes I have run repair twice and now did a rebuild.  It has not frozen for a bit, but I haven't really had time to work since running the last rebuild.

So that I understand, I would launch Aperture while holding down the Shift Key?  I will try that next.

You are always a help, Leone.

    You're welcome

Just keep this troupe-shooting guide handy:  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201289

It solves 99% of the Aperture problems.

On El Capitan Aperture is still working reasonably well, the next operating system upgrade might be critical.

Léonie – I have restored my Aperture Library to full health since our interchange last week; this by allowing a complete 'reprocess all photos' operation to run its course. With 35700 photos this took some time. So, once again Aperture is performing 'as advertised' with El Capitan (even the latest Developer build). I am much relieved – and my Library is backed up to a couple of internal drives and a couple of external drives. Thank you for helping me 'along the way' – very much appreciated. Keith

Great. Thanks for letting me know.

I'd keep a good backup of the system with the running Aperture you are having now. I don't have much hopes for Aperture on macOS Sierra, the next system, unless Apple were making an effort.

I have back-ups of the system(s) running Aperture – and will keep them. I am unlikely to upgrade to Sierra unless I have good evidence that Aperture works with it. Thanks for your interest!

Do I understand correctly that in the Aperture Library you selected Photos, then in the Photos menu selected Reprocess Originals...?
