Q: text message forwarding

Hi all,

I just got an iPhone SE. I message people (iMessage and SMS) on my Macbook and also my iPhone, but since I got this phone, the text messages (NOT iMessage) are not syncing on my laptop and phone. If I message someone from my laptop, it starts a whole new conversation on my phone, and vice versa. (Does that make sense? It just looks like I'm having one long conversation with myself, or someone is messaging me with no reply.)

I know this has to do with Text Message Forwarding, so I'm trying to set it up on my phone. There are two options on my phone: my macbook and my phone, and the macbook option is checked off (green). I am trying to check off my iPhone, so I click on it, and it gives me the "Enter the code shown on your iPhone to allow iPhone text messages to also be sent and received on "My iPhone." " pop up.

However, I am not getting any code.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!

    Hi emelvee,

Thanks for coming to us in the Apple Support Communities for support. I'm happy to provide you with some resources to help get your SMS forwarding working again.

To start, make sure you've enabled all of the options mentioned in this article:

Use Continuity to connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac

On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Add a check to both your phone number and email address. Then go to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding and enable the device or devices that you want to forward messages to.

Note that the list of devices here is for devices other than the one that you are using. This means that if you are seeing another iPhone listed in SMS forwarding, that you are likely signed into your Apple ID on another iPhone. This would explain why you are not seeing the code that it is asking you for on your iPhone.

If you are still having difficulties with sending/receiving SMS on both devices after confirming that, it may help to reconnect both devices to your Apple ID for Messages. To do this on your iPhone:

Sign in with a different Apple ID on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    1. Tap Settings > Messages.
    2. Tap Send & Receive.
    3. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.

    On your MacBook Pro:

    1. Open Messages
    2. In the menu bar open Messages > Preferences > Accounts
    3. Choose your Apple ID on the left
    4. Click Sign out

Once you are signed out in both locations, go ahead and sign in again to both in the same spot, then set up your SMS forwarding again using the aforementioned article or this one:

Messages (El Capitan): Get and send SMS messages

I hope you have a great rest of your day! Cheers.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

I cannot see the two options anymore on my phone — it just has the one device (my macbook) listed.

I reset everything but it still isn't working. Just opens a new conversation in my iMessage window on my laptop and makes it look like I'm having a conversation with myself and the other person is texting me and I'm not responding.
