Q: Moving from older iMac to newer model

I have a 2007 24" iMac running 10.5.8 at home and just purchased a new 27" 5K iMac. I used Time Machine to back up my old Mac via a USB 2.0 drive, but I am not sure about migrating anything over from the old to the new. I would like to have all of my files available if possible. I realize that most if not all of my software will need to be upgraded for the new computer. I use Adobe CS software as well as QuarkXPress. And some other odds and ends. What recommendations do you have for get me up and running as seamlessly as possible from my old system to this new one, with maximum utilization of the previous document, image & video files.

I would like to retire my old iMac, but understand that I may have to have it as a companion computer until I get smoothly running with the new system. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

    Kort,

Apple is explains migrating data in Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support. Everything you need is there. If you only want to migrate some data and not other, then it's best to create a bootable clone or to connect the two computer together using OS X Mountain Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode. You will need an Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter for the new computer to use the target disk mode though.

Yes, but my older system is running 10.5.8. That will be an issue, yes?

But the Apple literature says I need to be running at least Snow Leopard and not Panther to be able connect to the latest OSX.

    Which is it?

10.5.8 is not Panther. 10.5.8 is Leopard, 10.6.x is Snow Leopard. Also, you should be in contact with Apple directly about this. You have 90 days of complimentary AppleCare phone support. I'd suggest  you begin using it. If you were not aware please look over:

I also STRONGLY suggest that you buy AppleCare to extend the 1 year warranty to 3 which also includes 3 years of phone support.

My bad R. I keep confusing the OSX titles.

I will certainly contact Apple Care about this thanks to you. I never thought to use it for such a purpose.

I purchased the 3-year Apple Care when getting the new iMac so I'm good. I was told it arrived at home today, so I was hoping to prep for set-up this evening.  It was a custom order with the i7 chip and 4GB graphics card.  I also have 16GB of memory (from OWC) waiting at home already for me install and upgrade from the base 8GB to 24GB. 2TB Fusion drive.

    Any other tips?

    Right!

    See why I need help?

Hahaha. Really, I'm not an idiot when it comes to Macs. A bit sloppy perhaps and overwhelmed with all sorts of stuff, but I've been a Mac user since I bought my first Power Computing clone back in the mid 90s and then upgraded later to a Blue & White G3 tower and so on. I've been at this a while, but this is my first major upgrade outside of work in years.

I think I am going to miss my full size wired keyboard with the new iMac though. Do you think I should invest in a wired one?

Give yourself a week or 2 to get used to the wireless one, if you still feel the same way contact AppleCare and see if they can arrange an exchange for you.

Great idea R - do you think they would go for that? I have been using a wired version at work and home for years. My son has a wireless compact version for his 21.5" model. I never liked using it. I will keep your advice in mind.

The upgrade to a wired keyboard is a no-charge option when ordering an iMac from the online store. I don't see why they wouldn't allow and exchange, however a simple phone call to them will answer that question.

    Yes,

Follow the on-screen prompts. Connect the old computer's Time Machine backup to the new machine prior to turning it on, next turn it on and follow all the on-screen prompts. When it gets to the point when it asks if you are migrating from another Mac select Yes and then choose the Time Machine option and the select what you want to migrate. You cannot pick and choose app or files. For example if you tell it you are migrating Apps it's going to migrate ALL the apps.
