El Capitan is available free from the App Store.
El Capitan requires at least 8.8. GB's of free storage space. To check that click your Apple menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac then select the Storage tab.
If you do decide to upgrade, make sure to backup all your important data beforehand.
