Q: CAN'T CREATE A NEW iMOVIE

I'm not able to create a new iMovie since I updated my iMovie to the version 10.1.2. When I click on the create new iMovie window nothing happens, I also tried doing N and nothing happened either. But, when I click on the create new trailer it works perfectly. Can someone help please! I really need to use iMovie.

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

Hi, I literally just solved this exact problem for myself, a second ago!

Really hope this works for you too..

I went into finder > applications > iMovie > right clicked on show package contents > contents > MacOS > iMovie

Then iMovie loaded up and I could click on Projects and create a new movie project !

I clicked on everything to try to get it to work and this did it for me! Absolutely no idea how or why but I hope this works for you too as we both had the exact same issue!

I have the exact same issue.  I tried opening from finder > applications > iMovie > right clicked on show package contents > contents > MacOS > iMovie and still could not create a new movie.  I can create a Trailer or App Preview, but not a Movie.  (iMovie 10.1.2; El Capitan 10.11.6)

It may be a problem of a corrupted iMovie Library.

Have you tried to create a new library? If iMovie can create a new movie for a new library, it is not a problem of the currently installed imovie version.

You can create an iMovie Library for testing like this:  (iMovie Help)

    Create a new library

    • Choose File > Open Library > New.
    • In the Save dialog that appears, type a name for the new library, and navigate to the location where you want to save it.The default location is the Movies folder in your home folder.
    • Click Save.A new library is created in the location you chose, and a new, empty event with today’s date is created.

I have the same exact problem as the people above, I don't understand what you mean, how do you follow the step choose file> open library> new? Inside the iMovie application? On a file?

You can have several iMovie Libraries, for example, if you want to store your movie projects on more than one external drive. To switch between iMovie Libraries to create a new library, you use the "File" menu from the main menu bar in iMovie.

Testing with a different, new iMovie library will show you, if there is a general problem with the iMovie application or if your current iMovie library has a problem.
