Q: HELP! Currently on Yosemite...want to use aperture again!

I have Yosemite, I have my original BOX aperture 3 came in. I believe my computer has version 3.4.5 but I can't open it, it has an X through it. How can I use aperture again?

Only Aperture 3.6 can run on Yosemite.  Apple stopped the developement of Aperture, so you cannot install the update to aperture 3.6, unless you have an Aperture version that appears in Purchase history (the fourth tab) of the AppStore.

    • If Aperture is in your Purchase History, quit the AppStore, delete the crossed out version from Applications, (don't empty the Trash, so you can put it back), then open the AppStore, the fourth tab,  and click the Install button to reinstall Aperture. This should install the updated version.
    • If Aperture is not in your Purchase History, you can only update Aperture with the Help of the Apple Support.  Call Apple SUpport and talk them into providing a redeem code, so you can download the update.  You have to be very insistent, because they usually will refuse to provide the code, because Aperture is no longer supported.

More details here:    Updating to Aperture 3.6 After the Release of Photos

If all fails, you can run run Aperture 3.4.5 on Yosemite, but it is cumbersome:

    • Select the crossed out Aperture icon, ctrl-click it,  and use the command "Show Package Content".
    • Open the subfolder Contents, then MacOS.
    • Inside is an application - Aperture. Double click it to run.  Enter your registration code.

Oh my goodness, your all else fails option works perfectly! who knew?!

Thank you so much- I'm running on it now.

Do you think this works in El Capitan? Or should I just never update my laptop again

    again- much appreciated!

I've tested it in El Capitan. I can launch Aperture 3.4.5 this way also in El Capitan.  But it would be more convenient, if you could convince Apple Suport to help you to update to Aperture 3.6. The 3.6 update has some compatibility features.

i would make a full Time Machine backup of your Mac, before you upgrade to El Capitan. This will allow you to revert to your current system, if you should encounter problems.   OS X El Capitan: Revert to a previous OS X version

Last night I was on the phone with them for one and a half hours and their answer was: downgrade my operating system to an aperture compatible one, or buy aperture 3.6 from third party. I was so upset. Once I am less angry I'll try with another representative and pretty much just ask straight up for the redeem code for 3.6.

That is icredible, how poor the support has been.  An Apple representative should know, that you can only purchase older Aperture 3 versions from third party sellers, that cannot be updated to Aperture 3,6. That vrsion has only been available from the App Store. And you own alrady an expensive Aperture 3 licence and are entitled to the update.
