iPod and iTunes freeze up when pod plugged into computer

When I plug in my ipod to my computer with iTunes running, it freezes up iTunes, and does nothing else. I can hear the hard drive on my ipod clicking every once in a while, but that is it. I have to unplug the ipod (even though it says "do not disconnect") to be able to do anything with iTunes again.

I've updated iTunes, tried the 5 R's (which I cannot do all of because of the problem above) and restarted my computer. Hopefully someone here can help.

I am having somewhat the same problem. I think my problem is beyond help. I get a white screen with a line off to the right side going straight up and down on my pod. I have tried everything. One day it is working great, and the next day, I find this happening. HELP! I hope someone can help me find a solution to my problem.

What blows my mind is the number of posts with the same problem with no official response, and the shear number of problem posts per hour on this site. At least we're not alone. If this problem doesn't have a solution, this will certainly be the last ipod I buy. Too many other good ones out there now without these kinds of problems.

So, anyone know what to do with this issue?
