how to know used or empty disk space mac os x el Capitan

When I right click Macintosh icon on desktop and select info it shows about half the space empty.

Capacity: 499.05 GB Available:261.97GB

But when I click on the apple icon on top left of the screen and select

storage it also shows about the same gb of empty space on hard disk 261.26 free of 499.05 GB in numeric values but the color bar shows about 20% empty space and the space occupied by various items if added up leaves only about 90 gb of empty space.

Please let me know why there is discrepancy and which one is correct?User uploaded fileUser uploaded file

You have about 261 GB of free space. However, it looks like Spotlight didn't index your hard drive properly, being this the reason why you do not see the proper free space if you go to Apple menu -> About this Mac -> Storage. You have to reindex the "Macintosh" volume -> Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac - Apple Support This may take some minutes or hours, depending on the amount of data you have on your Mac.
