Q: Portable Home Directories - FileSync Fails on Login

Hi all,

I've already raised this as a bug report with Apple (radar ID 26756935) but thought I would raise this here in case anyone has seen something similar and knows of a fix.  We've got a 10.11.5 and Server 5.1.5 based setup (10.11.5 on the clients) with relatively normal mobility settings and on logout everything is working fine - preferences and files are being synced.  On login however we get a very brief filesync window popup but no files are synced.  Looking at the FileSyncAgent log this seems to be because we're getting a "Volume Not Found" error:

<Login> [16/06/15 00:15:53.622] Starting manual sync of "HomeSync_Mirror".

[16/06/15 00:15:56.180] Aborting sync of "HomeSync_Mirror".

[16/06/15 00:16:00.543] EXCEPTION: Volume Not Found

[16/06/15 00:16:00.545] Peer "network" is unable to sync. Not enough peers will be available to continue syncing.

[16/06/15 00:16:02.613] Sync of "HomeSync_Mirror" encountered errors. (User Cancelled)

It's worth noting that this is part of the login procedure and not a manual start/stop (despite what the log says), and this is basically reproducible every single time.  This process works fine on logout so doesn't seem related to access to the share.  Also checking the verbose logs it's looking for the volume in the right place (in this case /Volumes/Users/user.name).  I've tried this with AFP and SMB and the results are the same.  The Mounts section in LDAP and the User's record all show the expected details so I don't think there's a problem there. The settings themselves are being pushed out via Profile Manager but the clients are listing the correct settings and inclusion/exclusions so I don't think there's an issue with incorrect settings being sent.  We're pushing both Home and Preference sync settings and I've tried only syncing Preferences at login as well as both, but that doesn't make a difference.

In the worst case we can probably replicate the functionality with a loginhook, but obviously there's a much nicer UI for managing this for less technical users and to be honest as long as we set it up carefully we've had good results with PHDs in the past.

If anyone has seen something similar and knows of any fixes or further information it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
