Q: "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" Ticked and greyed out - SMTP Server in Mail

I'm trouble shooting for the second day my emails. I can't send email out anymore from multiple of my POP and IMAP accounts. I narrowed the problem down to the ticked and greyed out box "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" at the MAIL > PREFERNCES > ACCOUNTS > ACCOUNT INFORMATION > OUTGOING MAIL SERVER (SMTP) > EDIT SMTP SERVER LIST > ADVANCED tab.

I did setup the same accounts at my MacMini, which let me untick the said box, and it works just fine.

Anyone can tell me please why the box is ticked and greyed out at my MBP and not on my MacMini? What can I do do untick it?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Apple mail in OS X 10.10 or later versions yosemite has settings in mail > mail preferences > accounts > advanced : automatically detect & maintain account settings .

It should be disabled for best compatibility with kerio connect ( apple mail servers ) .

Without changing this setting means it should be unchecked sending and receiving mail can be delayed significantly .

i am not sure about mac mini : but still in the same way enter mail preferences & lastly advanced ( same method as above ), uncheck the box automatically detect & maintain account settings .

lastly a small window will appear stating save changes to google IMAP account .

    Click on save .

NOTE : please don't try to uncheck the box completely .

Thanks for you quick response. I need to uncheck the box  "automatically detect & maintain account settings" as my server host also suggests. My problem is that the box is checked and greyed out, so I can't change it. I need to know what makes it greyed out and how can I change it.

As apple designers have designed like this only you can't uncheck the box it will be semi greyed only .

Here a screenshot. Notice the box greyed out (red frame). Another problem is that the password (green frame) for the account never sticks, regardless how many times I add it and push the ok button. I think the "automatic detection of settings" by Apple does that.

You can uncheck it. I did uncheck it on my MacMini, which runs on the same OSX and uses the same email accounts. Something else makes this box greyed out.

The reason for it may be you could be entering wrong port number click the box SSL (  secured shell layer ).

Authentication : external ( TLS client certificate ) , uncheck the box allow insecure authentication , check the box use IDLE command if the server supports it .

For checking port number an apple article is there : TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software products - Apple Support

I think so port number is 993 .you can verify  in this article also .do the settings & when you try to close the window it will prompt to save . so click on save .

Thanks appreciate, I follow the settings from my host server. When I use the exact same account and port settings on my MacMini it works. The password sticks and I can uncheck the "Automatically detect and maintain settings" box.

There is something else on my MBP that keeps that box from being accessible. Someone on another tread (below) said something about ICLOUD Keychain maybe interfering with the settings. Not sure how it relates and also no comment on any positive results.

Try going to Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Accounts Information and uncheck Enable this account. Then see if you can uncheck Automatically detect and maintain settings. If successful, go back and enable the account.

Hi Eric Root, I tried that a few times with different accounts, and with disabling / enabling from MAIL>PREFERENCES and also from INTERNET > ACCOUNTS, unfortunately without success.

Even if I try to create a new server manually on the SMTP Server List, the "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" its already checked and greyed out by default?

I just created a new TEST USER on my MBP and added the same accounts to MAIL. No problem, the "Automatically detect and maintain settings" box at the SMTP Server List is NOT greyed out and i can uncheck it.

Conclusion, something within my MAIN USER Account is making the troubles and blocking me from adjusting the settings! Suggestions please, this is Day 3 on this problem and I'm running out of patience.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
