Q: Can I play music from a previous stopping point?

I bought some audiobooks at a yard sale recently and I am trying to listen to them on my iphone but the tracks are very long. When I stop listening and try to go back to the story later the "song" starts back at the beginning. Is there a way to change the settings so it remembers where I left off last time and start from there?

    Hi, Nysa,

I listen to audiobooks while I'm on long trips, which sometimes involves having to pause my tracks. Picking up where I last left is definitely important when I'm ready to go again, especially because those can be very long tracks. I'm happy to help make sure you can do that!

Based on your post, it sounds like you might have imported those audiobooks into iTunes on your computer, and then synced them to your iPhone. If that's the case, you're likely using the Music app on your iPhone to play them back. In order for a bookmark to be used to keep your place, that track needs to be classified as an audiobook via iTunes on your computer, and not another type of file (like a music file). The following information will help you make the necessary adjustments to the track information.

First, you'll change the track information to Audiobook within iTunes, using the instructions in the article below.

iTunes 12 for Mac: Edit song and CD information

The specific information you're looking for falls under the "Tips for using song and CD info to organize your music" section:

    • Identify an item that you imported from a CD as an audiobook, so it appears under Audiobooks instead of Music (click the Options button and choose Audiobook from the Media Kind pop-up menu). If you do this, iTunes also remembers your place in the audiobook.

Once you've done that, you just simply sync the audiobook to your iPhone as detailed in this article:

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB

After that, your place in the audiobook will be remembered for the next time you go back to it.

    Happy listening!
