Thanks for being a part of Apple Support Communities.
I see from your post that the Compass app and a similar app downloaded from the App Store are not able to locate the cardinal points. To get started with troubleshooting this issue I'd like you to please reset your location settings to the factory default by following the steps below.
If you would like to reset all of your location settings to the factory default, go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset Location & Privacy. When your location and privacy settings are reset, apps will stop using your location until you grant them permission.

Take care.

Jun 16, 2016 2:49 PM in response to oldmacuzerby alex_h1,Hey there,
Just so we're clear, is the app itself becoming unresponsive, or is it just not pointing in the correct direction? If the app is becoming unresponsive, then I suggest that you force the Compass app to close and then restart your iPhone:
Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the issue persists, then please backup your iPhone, import your photos, and then reinstall iOS:
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Once everything is backed up, follow these steps to restore:
- Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
- Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to your computer with the cable that came with your device.
- If a message asks for your device passcode or to Trust This Computer, follow the onscreen steps. If you forgot your passcode, get help.
- Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod when it appears in iTunes.
- In the Summary panel, click Restore [device].

- Click Restore again to confirm. Then iTunes erases your device and installs the latest iOS or iPod software.

- After your device restores to factory settings, it restarts. Now you can set it up as new.
Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings
Once the restore completes, set your iPhone up as new and test out your compass. After that you can restore your backup to your iPhone, and sync photos in iTunes, to get all of your data back:
Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup
Keep your photos safely stored and up to date on all your devices
Have a good one.
