Jun 16, 2016 3:09 AM in response to lethargosby Esquared,Keep Activity Monitor (from Utilities) open for a while. In View select 'All processes', select the PID tab . When that strange icon appears again, check the process that shows up at the top of the list. That should be the process that's connected to the process.

And processes do tend to finish or appear, but at least I could search them online and rule the others out. Anyway, thanks. Perhaps someone will be able to identify the icon eventually

Jul 10, 2016 11:55 AM in response to lethargosby lethargos,I eventually found that the symbol is related to libreoffice, or at least to the writer application from the libre office suite. When I start it and then start editing, it eventually shows up. When I exit the application, it suddenly disappears.
