All of a sudden, none of my devices (iPhone 5, iPhone 6, iPad 1) are appearing in the Photos sidebar when connected via USB. I have tried closing and opening Photos without success. The iCloud Photo Library is not enabled - I do not store my photos there. Any ideas would be greatly welcomed.

Does the title "Import" show in the sidebar, but not the devices?
Then hover the pointer to the far right of the "Import" title. There is a hidden Show/Hide button and unhide the devices.
Do the devices show in iTunes?
Then make sure, that the devices are unlocked and confirm on the device that you trust the computer.
Thanks for your reply, léonie. There is no Import title, just Photos at the top, then Albums (a Hide button appears when one hovers), then Projects (same Hide button). The devices appear in iTunes. Etes-vous française ?
I cannot test with my iPhone and iPad now. The batteries are nearly empty, and then the devices will not show when conencted to USB. I'm charging right now.
I noticed however previously, that I am continually getting a prompt to confirm that I trust the computer, whenever I connect the iPad or iPhone since the 9.3.2 update. And I had to go through with the iTunes sync at least once, then disconnect and reconnect, for the iPad and iPhone to appear again in Photos in Image Capture.
I haven't been getting numerous messages on my iOS devices asking to trust the computer. I tried your suggestion of syncing an iPhone via iTunes, disconnecting and reconnecting the device. Alas, this did not result in my device being visible on Photos.
Are you using "My Photo Stream"? Then try to disable it on your iPad and take a new picture withthe iPad afterwards, to ensure, that you do have at least one new photo on the iPad, that has not yet been transferred. Then connect the ipad again. You could also try a different USB port.
It is not only iCloud Photo Library that is making USB syncing difficult, My Photo STream is also interfering.
Thanks for all your suggestions, léonie. What finally worked was to restart my computer. All my devices now show up. I should have tried that from the beginning.
