How to Connect a HP Elite Book to the Cinema Display

I have a Cinema Display and it works perfectly with my Macbook (both with OSX and Windows 10).

Someone in the household put a spanner in the works and brought home a HP Elite Book. It has a Display Port.

I bought a cable with a Display Port on one end and and a mini display port on the other. I plugged the mini display port into the back of the Cinema Display. This does not work.

Should this work or am I totally doing it wrong? O know that these are Thunderbolt ports but I understand that they also are Display ports.

Do I need to use the existing cable of the Cinema Display with the mini display port and thus buy an adapter which has a female mini display port to male display port which would get plugged into the HP Elite Book?

Thanks in advance for any help.
