How to test if a Thunderbolt Display works

Hi, I will be purchasing a Thunderbolt Display on Craigslist. We will meet at a public place, not his home. Is there a way to check and make sure the display works? Is there some sort of menu I can bring up by just plugging in the panel to see if it works?
