Apple TV and photos

My main Mac is in UK, but I have a MacBook Air in France, where I also have an Apple TV. All my photos appear on the Air via iCloud photo library, no problem. I have switched on sharing and have ticked the boxes all photos and videos. The problem is that however long I wait, there are huge gaps in my albums on ATV. and there seems to be no logic to it. Some of the photos and videos that are recent are there, but others are not. The same applies to older ones. The only consistent thing is that every time I go into ATV, the same ones are there, and the same ones aren't

As you can imagine, this is very frustrating. I hope someone out there can help. I am sure it is something obvious, but I can't fathom it

Hi, you should post the generation of your ATV, see Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support, because they all have different software, hence different problems.

Only the Apple TV 4 has iCloud Photo Library.

Sorry, it's third generation. And yes, I think I knew that, but shouldn't it work through sharing on iTunes? And I cannot understand why some photos show and others don't

But in any case, is there a solution. Surely I should be able to see my photos on ATV somehow!

You have photo stream and shared albums via the photos app and home sharing via the computers app, which are you trying to use.

Yes, understood, so why isn't home sharing working? And why can I see some photos, but not all?

IS the library you are sharing from an iCloud Photo Library with optimisation enabled.

Check the Photos preferences and see if you have the optimisation option checked.

Oh, sorry, I see now! I have tried both optimisation and downloading originals, but neither option improves the situation

If it's optimised the Apple TV won't be able to show the image because the full resolution image isn't there. If you've had optimisation enabled and switch to full resolution version, it will take some considerable time to download all the originals.

This may not be the reason it's not working properly, but it's certainly a possibility.

Hi

Did as you suggested and it sort of worked but not quite! ATV now displays many more photos than before but there are still random gaps. I have no idea why. You have been a great help so I wonder if you have any more thoughts. All photos are displayed on my Mac, my iPad and my iPhone

Are all photos on your Mac now at full resolution. You might try opening a photo that is missing on the tv on the Mac and watching to see if it takes a moment to download or whether it opens straight away.

I Have opened one that is missing and one that is there. Takes the same time

in desperation I have restarted downloading the originals onto the Mac to see if the process missed any first time

By the way, if I turn on My Photo Stream just on the Mac and ATV, I assume that would be another solution. BUT does Photo Stream just stream all photos, or does it stream them divided up into albums, otherwise it is a waste of time

Photo stream only has photos from the last 30 days.
