Q: Apple TV and photos

My main Mac is in UK, but I have a MacBook Air in France, where I also have an Apple TV. All my photos appear on the Air via iCloud photo library, no problem.  I have switched on sharing and have ticked the boxes all photos and videos.  The problem is that however long I wait, there are huge gaps in my albums on ATV.  and there seems to be no logic to it.  Some of the photos and videos that are recent are there, but others are not. The same applies to older ones.  The only consistent thing is that every time I go into ATV, the same ones are there, and the same ones aren't

As you can imagine, this is very frustrating.  I hope someone out there can help.  I am sure it is something obvious, but I can't fathom it

All my photos are in the cloud.  I pay for extra storage. I home share from my UK desktop Mac to my UK ATV, and I home share from my French MacBook to my French ATV

That should be fine providing you have full resolution images on each Mac.

But I understand you are using home sharing so your location shouldn't make any difference. I suspect if you take your French Mac to the UK that you will see the same.

I suspect you are right, so where does the fault lie?  With my French MacBook or my French ATV?

Because in UK, there is no problem

I would think it's most likely to be on your Mac. You might try...

Assuming the missing photos are definitely fully downloaded (one way to be certain of this is to temporarily put them into edit mode), try making a slight change to your home sharing photo selections and hitting apply (you can always change these back)

    HI Winston

Problem solved.  I know how, but I don't know why!

i sat in front of the TV, with the MacBook on my knee and went through all my albums on ATV.  When there was a gap, I brought up that photo on my Mac, and hit edit mode.  If it was already edited, I reverted to the original. If it was unedited, I enhanced it.

BIngo!  The photos magically appeared.  It took a long time, as you can imagine, but well worth it

    Any thoughts on why?

Thanks for all your help and patience.  Much appreciated

That tells me they were optimised versions to begin with. You shouldn't assume that because a photo has been edited it is in full resolution, it's only by putting it into edit mode that you can be sure it's in full resolution, if you had the optimised option on previously, photos that have been edited can revert to an optimised state. Optimisation is dynamic, photos will only be optimised if space is needed.

Yes, I think i see that.  In the past I have only edited on my Mac in UK, which has always shown original versions, but I have recently been doing it on my Mac in France

    Now to final questions, please

    1. Now they are downloaded as originals in France, if I now edit them will they stay in original form and therefore show up on ATV?  I say this because some of the photos I have reverted to original now look pretty bad.  Can I edit them again?

    2. Can any newly downloaded photos be edited without problem?

    Thanks again
