How to display time?

I'm not sure what this little area/strip is called, but in Garageband, I could get it to display the time. I can't seem to do it in Logic Pro X. Maybe there's no way to do it?

In the Main Menu under Record, uncheck the "Use Musical Grid" option

Another way is to show the secondary Ruler (in the Local Menu ➤ View ➤ Secondary Ruler). If the Primary Ruler shows bars|beats, then the Secondary Ruler will show min:sec and vice versa.

Hope that helps

This is SMPTE format that starts with the hour (hh:mm:ss:ff). The convention (from film production) is that a Project starts at 1 hour (01:00:00:00). Any new Project in Logic is set that bar 1.0.0 refers to 1hh0mm0ss0ff and that is what you see in the Ruler. The 1 means "hour 1".

The reason/history behind that convention is interesting: You started a Project at 1h to avoid problems when synchronizing reel-based matching (audio and film) and the hour number sis usually used to mark the individual film reel (now with disk-based system not a problem anymore. A movie is usually broken down into 20 minutes segments (Reel 1, Reel 2, Reel 3, etc) and the hour in the SMPTE timecode is used to indicate what reel a specific video was. This convention is still used.

To get rid of that, just go to the Project Settings ➤ Synchronization ➤ General and set the field "plays at SMPTE" from 1:0:0:0 to 0:0:0:0. This way the hour value is zero and will not be displayed in the Ruler, leaving you with the format mm:ss
