I don't know about the invalid argument but it saved you from a "fate worse than death" in regards to CleanMyMac3. That's considered malware around here and does more harm to systems and iPhoto/Photos libraries than good.

Do not ever run any "cleaning" or "optimizing" types of software.

As for the Genitech disk image have you tried downloading it again?

Thanks OT for your advice and suggestions. But, my problem persists of being unable to open ANY downloaded disk image files (.dmg) and I cannot find the DiskImageMounter.app anywhere on my iMac (used to open .dmg's) ? possibly this missing or has been corrupted.

Finally, when I attempt to reinstall the OS via; Install OS X El Capitan.app.... I get the following results:

Where do I go now....??

Disk Image Mounter can be found in Macintosh HD > System > Library > CoreServices.

But judging by the replies in this topic, a new installation of OS X might be in order. Since that doesn't work the way you tried, your best option is the Recovery route: OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

(Reinstalling from Recovery Mode should leave your apps and personal files untouched, but that doesn't make a backup less necessary!)

Thank you Esquared for your response........ However, as you were posting, I had already decided to do an install of a new copy of MacOS - via the recovery process

which is a time consuming and lengthy process. But it was successful yeah!

I now have fully operational system again - which is now also backed up on my 6TB Time Machine.

Many thanks... to all

Best regards
