DesktopsDo not do it. McAfee is a worthless scam. It offers no additional protection. All it ever does is cause problems.

Servers EnterpriseMcAfee certainly has a poor reputation in the Mac community along with Symantec. However the message is clear if you really must install it then you first need to upgrade to OS X 10.8.
Of course some older Macs can only run a maximum of OS X 10.7.5 aka. Lion and cannot be upgraded to 10.8 aka. Mountain Lion. In this case either you get a newer Mac, do not use McAfee or any other anti-virus product or chose one which still does support Lion.
Note: Fewer and fewer anti-virus products will support Lion or probably soon Mountain Lion. Strictly speaking Sophos have already ended support for Lion and officially will end support for Mountain Lion in October 2016 and also end support for Mavericks at that time as well. However I have Sophos installed and still working in Snow Leopard so it is likely more that they will not provide technical support or fixes. I can say that it no longer works at all for Snow Leopard i.e. 10.5.

AV software is not required on a Mac.
