Mac keeps telling me paper jam but there is none

Hi,

I have a Samsung CLX 6220FX printer connected via network to my MacBook and it works without problems not only in Mac OS but also in Windows.

However, in Mac OS I have a really strange problem:

When I start to print this tiny mac printer dialogue opens, telling me that the job is being recorded etc. In this dialogue I always get the information that there is a paper jam. But the printer works flawlessly. There is no paper jam. In Windows this error message is not displayed.

I can make this message disappear by switching off the SNMPv1/v2 function in the printer's config program via my browser. However, the prints then become really slow which is not really acceptable.

Any ideas what the problem could be? It only affects

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

As you have found, SNMP is used by OS X to interact with a printer to determine its operational status. So turning it off would stop you receiving an alert but it does not make sense that it would also impact the speed of processing a spool file.

One possible workaround is to create a new print queue but change the protocol being used to connect to the printer. To do this you will need to determine what IPv4 address the Samsung is using. Once you have that information you can open Printers & Scanners and click the plus button to add. Then click on the IP icon and enter the IPv4 address. Then set the Protocol to Line Printer Daemon and select the relevant Samsung driver in the Use menu and click Add to complete the creation of the new print queue. Then open a document to print and see if you get the same paper jam alert.
