Jun 17, 2016 7:46 AM in response to Thomas-Mby Brian Nesse,You can't upgrade OS X Lion to OS X Lion Server. You have to start with a OS X Lion Server install.
Bringing up the log window (I think the installer had a log window back in 10.7) may also give more detailed information.

Running OS Build: Mac OS X 10.7.5 (11G63)
It appears that you have OS X Lion installed on your Xserve, not OS X Lion Server.
