Q: Mac Finder sharing only working one way

After years of connecting to my iMac from a MBP via the Finder, I can now no longer do so. The iMac doesn't show up under "Sharing" any more. I CAN connect via the Screen Sharing app, which prompts the computer to now appear in a Finder window, but still can't connect. I can, however, connect to the MBP via the iMac as normal.

The only recent change I can think of is that I updated the firmware on my Airport Extreme recently. Considering File Sharing still works in one direction but not both, what could be going on here?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 / 16 GB

    Hello B J P!

That's interesting that the sharing between your Mac computers is one way currently.  There's some settings that can be checked.

Check out this article: How to connect with File Sharing on your Mac - Apple Support

At the top, like it suggests, make sure that the Sharing settings for both Mac computers are configured for the proper access.

Then there are some tips listed at the bottom:

    • When entering a URL, the name of the shared disk, volume, or directory you are attempting to connect to (share name) must be specified. You are not prompted for it.
    • You cannot type spaces as part of a share name when connecting. In place of any space in the share name, use %20 .
    • When troubleshooting a connection issue, you can ping the IP address of the other computer using Network Utility. A successful ping verifies a TCP/IP connection between the two computers. This is an important first troubleshooting step when there's no response or a timeout for a connection attempt, since SMB connections involving a Mac require TCP/IP.  However, a successful ping does not mean the SMB service is also available or working from the other computer.

Check those 3 at least as most of the others are Windows related. If more assistance is needed, reply back with the OS X versions on both your Mac computers.

    Regards.
