Q: What to do with a disabled iphone 6 in lost mode ?

On my way from school, I found a iphone 6 laying in the grass. It still had power but there was no sim. I told my parents about it they kind of starting freaking out because they believed it would be traced back to our home. However, it hasn't and its been several weeks now. I don't know who to return the phone because the phone says "iPhone Disabled: Connect To iTunes" but when I connect it it says "iTunes could not connect because iPhone is Locked and in Lost Mode". So what does this mean ? Does it mean that the phone is no usage to me ?

iPhone 6, null

    Hello MariahD630

I'm glad to hear a good samaritan found the device

Don't worry as long as the iPhone is into lost mode means someone is trying to recover it but with no SIM or network connection whatsoever its not possible, tell your parents there's no need to freak out, police won't knock on your door tonight

On this kind of situations when you find an iPhone you can contact apple support and report it, if you have a chance to do it, that would be great

Also if you can't get in touch with the owner or report it to apple you can take the phone to the nearest police station to see if there's a report of a stolen or misplaced device

Don't try to activate it, is nearly impossible without the ID or password, if you do so keep in mind that will alert the owner as well once you connect it to a wifi network and then he will knock your door because apple activation lock system is pretty accurate

Report a lost or stolen Apple product - Apple Support here's a link that can explain you a little bit more about what do to as well

https://www.icloud.com/activationlock/ You can also check the activation lock status here

    Hope it helps.

    Regards,

Turn it in to the police or the school's lost and found.  It is more than "nearly impossible" to activate it without the iCloud password, it IS impossible to do so.  Thus you cannot actually use the device, ever, as there is no way for you to defeat activation lock.  Nor can you get any personal information about the owner, from anyone - nobody with that knowledge will divulge it to someone merely because they ask for it.  The police may be able to do something about that, but they would be the only ones.

There is also no point in contacting Apple.  Apple does not get involved with lost or stolen devices at all - see Report a lost or stolen Apple product - Apple Support

WHY did you not turn to over to the police to begin with? It does NOT belong to you. You are fully aware that it does not belong to you. Turn it over to the police. If it does happen to be traced to you, you may be charged with 'theft by finding'. Look it up. It's a crime.
