Why does macbook go into safe sleep with power adapter connected

My macbook goes into safe sleep every night even when plugged in. I thought it was only supposed to do that if on battery power. I have set it to "Never" when connected to power in energy settings, but that didn't help. I also tried changing the time through the terminal. That didn't help either.

Any ideas? It's just a pain to always have to wait a few minutes when opening the lid the next morning.

Using El Capitan, mid 2012 Macbook Pro. 8 GB of Ram, plenty of hard drive room.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)
