When I press command R I get a flashing question mark, not the apple symbol.

When I press command R I get a flashing question mark, not the apple symbol. I erased my hard drive because I am selling my old macbook pro. I didn't know I had to create a boot disk first.

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  2. Click the Startup Disk icon in the System Preferences window.
  3. Click the icon of the volume you normally use to start up your computer (usually named "Macintosh HD").
  4. Close the System Preferences window.

If a flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac - Apple Support

You cannot choose a disk because there is no startup disk yet.. Boot up command + option + r and reformat and do Internet Restore. You then have the original system your Mac shipped with ready for sale.
