Q: Remotely erased stolen iMac. Got it back. Now what?

I recently had my iMac stolen. I remotely erased and locked it with Find My Phone. AMAZINGLY enough, it was recovered and now I have it back. The problem is, now what? When I boot, it goes to the grey screen that says it has been disabled (without giving me the chance to put in the 4 digit passcode I created when erasing). I held down COMMAND-R, and got to enter the passcode, but still went to the same screen. I can't even contact Customer Support, because I can't get into the computer to get the serial number that is required.

Any help on this one?  Thanks so much

Clean Install of El Capitan on a New Disk

    1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command-Option-R keys until a globe appears.
    2. The Utility Menu will appear in from 5-20 minutes. Be patient.
    3. Select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.
    4. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (usually, the out-dented entry) from the side list.
    5. Click on the Partition tab in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
    6. Set the partition scheme to GUID.
    7. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
    8. Click on the Apply button, then click on the Done button when it activates.
    9. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Me.
    10. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

This should install the version of OS X that was pre-installed when the computer was new.

Thanks for that. It worked PERFECTLY as you said, right up until the end. It went right back to the grey screen saying that it had been disabled. It did give me the place to enter the passcode before it started the globe thing and worked quite a long time. But to no avail.

Any other ideas? You've been great already, so I thank you for that!!

Make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If needed find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple. Did you try seeing what you can do from your iCloud.com sign-in page? Click on the Find My Phone icon after you log in. I believe from there you can turn off Find My Phone. I just don't know if it will work now that you have erased the computer.
