I make lower third text files and drag them onto timeline. Render files.
They then become un-rendered.
Any suggestions please.

When I go back to project timeline they turn to red.
When Final Cut Pro 7 (and earlier versions) begin to act in unexpected ways, the usual first step is to trash your preferences:

You can download Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion (free) to do all the work for you:

Your preference will be all reset to default settings the next time you launch FCP.
