Q: Mail app will not open?

I have been using the Mail app for a while on the latest version of el capitan but it has suddenly refused to open anymore?

I have restarted the machine & the app just hangs when I open it, no windows even open?

does anyone have an idea what to do please?

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

Hi,  That folder is a user, it can't be moved to the desktop as the desktop is a sub folder of itself?

HI,  i don't really want to change my username or home folder name.  Surely it is something inside this folder that is the problem?

Thanks, now we are getting somewhere.

    FusionDrive (not my preference).

I do not see the immediate bandit, but there has to be a clean up.

I have a meeting outside for about 2-3 hours, after that I will come back. But some preliminary remarks:

    1. Trusteer Rapport is a unwanted app: I know that some bankmanagers recommend it but it is really crap, already for years. It is at least very counterproductive with OSX. Uninstall it. It is in systemPreferences. Remove it there but there is more to do than just that.

    2.  Delete the adobe switchboard plist in MacintoshHD->Library->Launchdaemons

    3. Delete the RealPlayer plugin in Homefolder/yourname->Library->InternetPlug-ins

    4. delete or at least disable all extensions in  Safari->Preferences->Extensions. We can test that later.

    5. Delete  all entries in  MacintoshHD->Library->StartupItems.

    6. Remove or disable all  non-apple Panes in SystemPreferences, except Java, and Flashplayer, update Flashplayer.

    Restart.

    see you later.

    Lex

    OK, thanks.

I am satisfied with your cleaning up.

There are now (maybe unrelated) remarks to make:

    a. forget about TimeMachine disk: all OK.

    b. Mail: your issue is not a crash, but a "hang", why is not sure yet, maybe point c, or something in one of your accounts.

    c. Memory Processes: much too high (again, as before) for the webkit, should be around 1GB or so: this may be (one of the causes for your issue).

    Can you do following:

restart your mac, do not start any app, and certainly not Safari. Run another etrecheck list, save it on the desktop via the clipboard.

Open Mail before any other app, then run another etrecxhack list and save it on the desktop too, as list #2.

Then open Safari and run yet again an etrecheck list, save it on the desktop as #3.

Then post all 3 lists from the chapter "Top Processes by CPU"  to  the end.
