Reinstall OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Be sure to backup before proceeding.

    1. Restart the computer and after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears.
    2. Choose Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on the Continue button.
    3. After Disk Utility loads select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) entry from the side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button.
    4. When the process finishes, quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
    5. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

THank you for this how to instruction. However after performing step 1 it asked me  to connect to the internet and did, then it displayed a rotating globe image and a countdown. After the countdown the screen went black for a second then back to gray and it stayed there for atleast an hour. I was hoping it was doing something in the background but its unlikely. Any more ideas as to whats going on with MBP?

Did you actually have an Internet connection? It sounds like you did not and the remote system was trying to connect for all that time. My suggestion is to have an Ethernet connection establish before you try the procedure. You should also check that your model can do the Network Recovery: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. If your model is on the list, then download the firmware updater and try the above again after it is installed.
