Apple Music does not permit Up Next when connected to car stereo through Apple USB cable

iPhone 5s iOS 9.3.2

When connected to my Toyota Rav4 music console through the USB cable Apple Music App on my iPhone 5s not not permit me to use the Up Next feature to view or modify the playlist. Two things are observable: (1) if I try to view the Up Next list I get the error "Your accessory does not support Up Next. To use Up Next, first disconnect this accessory." (see picture below) (2) For a song in the song menu from the 3 dots there is not option to add the song to up next.

The Up Next feature works fine if not connected to the car stereo or if connected to the car stereo using BlueTooth without the USB connected (if I use BT with the USB cable still connected I still cannot use Up Next).

It appears that for some reason Apple is disallowing the Up Next feature.

The Apple "Help" line was not very helpful. They said it was because my car stereo did not support CarPlay and CarPlay does not support the Up Next feature. Huh?

Since Apple doesn't seem to be able to help me I wonder if anybody else has had the same problem and knows the reason and/or a solution.
