That depends who "I" is.
If you are not the Family Organizer, you can redeem gift cards to your own account and use the credit to purchase content.
The Family Organizer, however, must have a credit card at setup time, to meet the legal requirement of verifying that he/she is taking financial responsibility for the members. After setup, the Organizer can switch to a debit card. A gift card will not suffice.
