Q: mail stopped working completely June 2016sometime after last el capitan update

For about a month 'mail' has been acting up a bit needing to be forced quit or taking a while to load, but sometime last week (06/08 --06/14), it has stopped working completely. It tries to open, but never makes it as far as opening a window let alone receiving mail and then it just goes non-responsive so that I need to use the force quit on it. below is the first portion of the report that it generates; does anyone know how to read this and tell me if there is something I can do to fix it?

    Hi there, sheski!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities! From your post, I'm understanding that the Mail app isn't working as expected; it won't load any messages, and becomes unresponsive shortly after opening. I use email as my primary form of communication throughout the day, so I know it's important to be able to access the Mail app. I have some troubleshooting that may help to get the issue resolved.

    1. Quit the mail app. You may need to force quit if it is unresponsive. Once closed, press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard while reopening the Mail app. Allow the app to open and test to see if it becomes unresponsive again, or if it opens and lets you access your messages.

    2. If that does not get Mail working, restart your Mac. Quit the mail app (again, force quitting if you have to). Then click the Apple  menu in the upper left of the screen, and select "Restart" from the drop down menu. When it boots up again, open the Mail app and test it.

    3. Test in safe mode. You can follow the instructions in the article linked below to boot into safe mode:
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up

Even though the title of the article isn't specific to your issue, it's still a good step to take.  Safe mode will run a few checks of your system, and disable certain software that may be causing a conflict with your Mail app.

    4. Test in a new user account. Read more about why this is a good step to take, and how to set up and test a new user account, in the article below:
How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

    5. Reset your System Management Controller (also called the SMC). You can read more about what resetting the SMC will help, and get instructions on how to do it, in the following article:
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

    Have a great day!

You have not indicated (or may be I missed) the number of mail accounts you have

I would delete each one in sequence if all else fails and see if the error goes away - then re add them back after the test

Do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.

    Quit Mail.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.

Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

If that doesn’t solve it repeat the above using Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.
