Q: MBP stops at log on screen without option to insert password

Mid 2012 rMBP, following pressing the power button the log on screen appears but even though the mouse/trackpad is active there is no active option to insert my password to continue the boot up process, a PRAM restart sometimes cures the issue but on the next startup the problem remains. Is this a warning of a more serious problem or is there some other process I can perform to cure the issue ?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, Yosemite 10.10.1

It may simply be a corrupted preference or cache file. I would first do a Safe Mode boot then reboot normally. This will take more time than a usual startup so just be patient. This clears and rebuilds some system caches. If this does not help then I suggest you try reinstalling OS X. If you no longer have your Yosemite installer application, then see this: How to reinstall OS X on your Mac - Apple Support.

Hello, Many thanks for the reply, I tried the safe mode boot up and again got as far as the log on screen, it said safe mode in red at the top of the screen but again whilst  had control of the mouse pointer clicking on my log on profile would not give me the box to input my password. I tried several times with the same result so I went on to your second suggestion and reinstalled the OS which ( fingers crossed ) seems to be working  correctly. I appreciate your help as I am not a very under the bonnet technical person, I usually switch on and mainly edit my photos in Photoshop etc without having to get too far down in the setting so a problem as described was beyond anything I had experienced with this machine since purchasing it in 2012, so again thank you
