Q: MBP stops at log on screen without option to insert password
Mid 2012 rMBP, following pressing the power button the log on screen appears but even though the mouse/trackpad is active there is no active option to insert my password to continue the boot up process, a PRAM restart sometimes cures the issue but on the next startup the problem remains. Is this a warning of a more serious problem or is there some other process I can perform to cure the issue ?
MacBook Pro with Retina display, Yosemite 10.10.1

It may simply be a corrupted preference or cache file. I would first do a Safe Mode boot then reboot normally. This will take more time than a usual startup so just be patient. This clears and rebuilds some system caches. If this does not help then I suggest you try reinstalling OS X. If you no longer have your Yosemite installer application, then see this: How to reinstall OS X on your Mac - Apple Support.
