Q: MacBook Pro 15" 2011 strange not charging

Hi everyone

I've bought MacBook Pro late 2011 on Gumtree and not charging

Things what I know:

- obvious things I've done ie. SMC and PRAM reset.

- got 2 front corners bit bent (nothing cracked)

- genuine Apple charger is green light only and when disconnected MacBook switching itself off (even when battery is connected to motherboard)

- new replaced PowerHut brand battery is detected and showing 100%

- new replaced charging port

- MacBook is going to "Sleep" randomly... when battery is connected to motherboard - when press space key it's waking up.

- no visible evidence of liquid damage

- when battery is connected to motherboard and press 'battery button' green lights flash randomly - which means - sometimes all flash and dim like as fully working - other time just one light appear - other time all flash 3 times

- when battery is disconnected from motherboard everything works as it should (apart no obvious hold on charge)

It looks like battery is doing something wrong - but what? It is new and connector looks ok.

Thank You everyone in advance for help

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test

    Genius reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/

    on-line https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action

You can try the AHT  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 however it is not definitive by any means, may kickout a error code.

D for diagnostics does not work and I know how to do this.

I've been in Apple shop and they told me it will cost small fortune to fix it

I haven't heard of PowerHut, but it seems to me like you've got yourself a defective battery since your computer seems to run fine without it. I'd suggest you return it and get a new one.

Another thing worth mentioning is that your battery should be made for the year your MacBook is from. MacBooks are very picky about that. Let's say the battery is for a 12-13 MacBook, it may cause your 2011 model to do strange things even though the battery looks very similar..You may want to check that. A repair shop in my town had replaced the battery in an iPhone with a very similar battery but for another iPhone which had higher capacity, and it fried the charging circuit so the phone wouldn't charge unless it was turned on.

    1. I've bought MacBook on Gumtree so I cannot return battery

    2. I've done research and there is one model battery to very long list of MacBooks from early 2011 through late 2011 and mid 2012

    3. I would buy new battery right away if I would be 100% sure it will resolve problem - but I do not want to spend £30 on new one just-to-try-and-see-what-happen

Try to run the Apple Hardware Test.  You may have to start with the OPTION + D keys.

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

Open System Information >Power and post this from your MBP:

Make certain that the charger is connected.

I fix a lot of MacBooks at work. If I had your laptop here I could measure a few things and give you a good answer in a short time, but unfortunately that's not the case. The problem may be the battery, it may be the motherboard or it may be both. But the way things sounds, it's most likely the battery. Are you good with electronics? Can you measure things with a multimeter?

When battery connected to motherboard it is detected and got all information about it like in Your photo (10 cycles charge) - but then MacBook is getting crazy - ie. got some artefacts durning boot for about 2 sec - but then is fine - or when pressed battery button - got random information about battery status - sometimes like all fine - other time all lights flashing few times - other time just one green LED.

I've done Diagnostic without battery as I don't want to risk damage MacBook with battery attached anymore and it says...... "no trouble found" :/    passed in 6:13sec

I know some things with electronics but don't have multimeter - but what and where to check please?

Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  Perhaps they can sort things out for you.

    Ciao.

Did you ask about the flat rate Depot Repair service?  This may save you some money.  They ship it out to the central depot, turn around time is a little longer.
