Q: iPad 2 - iBook screen going black

I have an iPad 2 and use it a lot for reading books on iBook. iBook has started to shut down the first time I open the app, but opens on the second try. Every now and then (at least once per session) the screen turns to black with either white writing or no writing at all. When there is no writing I cannot read that page and can find no way to stop the app changing the page colour. Also when I shut the app down, it does not save either the bookmark or my place in the book. I have to make a note of where I am so I can scroll through to get back to the correct page. This problem is only in the iBook app. The rest of my apps are fine, including the Kindle app. Would appreciate some advice on this as it's getting very annoying.

    Hello suepernz,

Thanks for asking for assistance here in the Apple Communities. I'll be happy to offer some things to try to get your iBooks app running properly again on your iPad 2. The first thing we want to do is to make a backup of all your data in iTunes or iCloud. This link will help with that:

How to back up your devices using iCloud or iTunes

Once we know your data is safe, go ahead and restart the iPad. You do not need to do the force restart, just a normal restart will suffice for this.

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

If the issues continue, go ahead and try to reset the settings on your device. Go to Settings > General > Reset and then click reset all settings. What this does is to reset some of your Settings to factory defaults. It’s not a complete removal of settings, and will not impact your personal data. It removes all of your preferences for Wi-Fi (including passwords for each network), Bluetooth, Do No Disturb, Notifications, General, Sounds, Brightness & Wallpaper, and Privacy.

If you are still having trouble, then we want to get a new version of the operating system, which will bring in a new version of iBooks. To do this, you will need to erase your personal data and set the iPad up as new using iTunes. This link will help you to do this:

Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

Once the iPad is set up as new, you will test to see if the iBooks issues are happening without your personal data on the device. If not, we know the issue was with some data on the device or in the iOS version, which will be in you backups. You can manually bring data back using iCloud or iTunes, but do not restore from the backup as you will bring the problem right back in. These two articles will help you sync your information back:

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB

Sync media between your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and iTunes on your Mac or PC

    Cheers.
