Q: Imessage Question...

I am not very familiar with Apple devices and was wondering what could it possibly mean when you are able to send someone a message via Imessage using their email address but not their phone number any longer? I had been messaging said person for quite sometime and now all of a  sudden today when I went to type in their phone number it tells me it is no longer registered to Imessage.

iPod touch, iOS 9.3.2

If you created an Apple Id when you first set up your iPod touch, the Apple Id can be used with iMessage. In case you don’t know, an Apple Id is your email address and password. I think you are trying to send a message to that person’s Apple Id. Am I correct?

I know and understand Apple ID for the most part. What I meant is I had been using Imessage to send text messages to someones phone number all off a sudden today when I go to enter their phone number the numbers turn red and when you click on the phone number itself it says it is no longer registered to Imessage but I am able to send a message to this person using their email address. If one wasnt registered wouldnt they both not be? Is this some sort of error? I know this person's number hasnt changed and that they also have an Apple device.

I don’t think that’s an error. Did you ask the person if they accidentally blocked you? They can always unblock you by going to settings>messages>blocked. Then they find the contact they want to unblock and swipe down to unblock it. Also the email address would be registered with iMessage but the phone number wouldn't. Or maybe they canceled their phone plan?

Can that person send you a Message using their phone number and can yo successfully reply?

Is that person since fro a phone?

Maybe they lost the association between the phone number and ID.

Add or remove your phone number to iMessage or FaceTime on your Mac, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

I have yet to receive any sort of response from this person so I dont even know if they are able to reply to me or not.It still shows their phone number as not being registered to Imessage I can not text them or Facetime. However, the email address which is a gmail account I can do all the above.

Yes this person is using an Iphone I however am using an Ipod Touch.

Is that something that can happen just out of the blue like this?

The color depends upon the service sending the message:

colors are blue (for iMessages) and green (for SMS)
