Cannot restore iPod

I have read the discussion for Corrupt iPod Classic and tried all of the suggestions listed.

The iPod is not recognized by iTunes (latest version for my MacBook) and is not showing up in Finder.

When running the diagnostics, it tells me the "Can't open device" and underneath that it says "ERROR! Diag Halt".

It does not show up in Disk Utility so I can't try to repair disk.

I tried DFU restore on the MacBook. When I did this and opened iTunes, it did pop up with a message about restoring the iPod and went on to prepare the iPod for this but nothing ever happened. I left it connected for at least 20 minutes.

I also tried connecting it to our Windows laptop and it was recognized in the Device Manager as an Apple USB device but not in iTunes.

Any other suggestions?

See iPod Displays a Red "X" Icon - Apple Support. Apple may no longer have much interest in servicing iPod classics. The line was withdrawn quite some time ago. I would normally suggest you look at Corrupt iPod Classic, however if the error message suggests that the drive won't mount so you won't be able to read off the stats.

See this recent post by Kenichi Watanabe - Re: My iPod Classic 160Gb won't register in iTunes - which gives a link to a potential DIY drive replacement.

Do we assume that the hard drive is corrupt? Does Apple have replacements drives if we were to take it to the Genius Bar?

If you don't think Apple has the replacement part, then the only real option is to replace the drive with a compact flash drive and do it myself?

I really wish they would have continued with the Classic. It is the only device with that kind of storage capacity.

Thanks!

Apple does not replace the hard drives. I just had an online chat with Apple Support. What they will do is to replace my existing iPod Classic with a refurbished one identical to the one I have, along with a 90 day warranty. The cost is a total of $327 (shipping, iPod and taxes). While not cheap at least I know that I have this option and can continue to enjoy owning a Classic.

I do appreciate your help here. The Corrupt iPod Classic is a great post and I appreciate the efforts here to solve problems. Thank you very much!
