Q: Airdrop from 5s to 6/pad

Hi,

I am using an iPhone 5s.  Some of my friends are using iPhone 6 or iPad Air2.  I am unable to transfer any photos or files using airdrop as these iPhones and iPads are not appearing in my airdrop list as other iPhone 5s are appearing.

Please help.

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.3.2

    G'day Siddhartha_ca,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you're unable to send photos via AirDrop from your iPhone 5s to your friends iPhone 6 or iPad Air2. I use AirDrop with my friends too and can partner with you to help find the best resolution.

Use How to use AirDrop with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and make sure both devices using Airdrop have met the requirements, specifically, this section:

    What you need

To share content with AirDrop, both people need one of these devices using iOS 7 or later, or a Mac with OS X Yosemite or later:

    • iPhone 5 or later
    • iPad Pro
    • iPad (4th generation) or later
    • iPad mini or later
    • iPod touch (5th generation) or later

You also need to turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. If you want to share with your contacts, sign in to iCloud.

Learn more about using AirDrop to share with people using a Mac with Yosemite.

Additional information can be found in the iPhone User Guide

    Have a great day!

    Hello judysing,

Thanks for your reply.  As per your guide I had already tried these things but to no avail.

The ios on all the systems (iphone 5s, iphone 6 and ipad) are 9.3.2.  Wi-fi and bluetooth are on on all devices.  Airdrop is activated for "everyone" on all devices.

Airdrop is possible from iphone 6/ipad to iphone 5s, but the reverse is not happening,  There is no devices shown in iphone 5s airdrop.

However, when an iphone 5s within the range, airdrop on iphne5s shows that other iphone 5s and airdrop is possible.

Is there any restricition for airdrop from a lower version device to a higher version device?

    Regards,

    Siddhartha

    Hello Siddhartha_ca,

There are no AirDrop device restrictions. As long as both devices meet the AirDrop requirements and settings, everything should be fine.

What I'd recommend is testing this in multiple physical locations (Wi-Fi networks) and see if you get the same result. It's possible that the current environment is restricting the devices from communicating with each other via AirDrop.

    Best Regards.
