Q: Problem with opening Applications e.g Mail and Notes after updating the new OS X El Capitan.

Hi Could you please send me a solution to my problem as soon as possible.

I recently updated my Mac with the New OS X El Capitan.

Many things where missing but after a few hours of searching I found a lot of them in other folders.

I have not used time Machine or backed up anything.

I really need some of my Notes which had some sensitive information for work. I have found my NotesV6.storedata and have opened it online but unfortunately i am not able to understand anything I see in the coding.

Mainly i am unable to open my Notes Application. When I click on the application it shows its opens with the task bar at the top of my screen but no window is opening. The exact same is happening with my Mail application.

This is really unfortunate seeing that i use both these apps daily at work. This update has been waisting a lot of my time. I really wished I never did this update.

Any Help would be highly appreciated

    Hi Righardt,

I understand it must be difficult to be without Mail and Notes after your upgrade to OS X El Capitan. I'd be happy to help you with some possible solutions for this issue.

To get started, please try the steps listed in this article to force close Mail and Notes:

Force an app to close on your Mac - Apple Support

Once you've forced the apps to close, try re-opening them and see if the problem persists. If so, please restart your Mac and test for the issue once more.

If you are still unable to open the apps, you will need to try re-installing them as a next step. Since these apps are built into OS X, you'll need to reinstall OS X on your Mac. Reinstalling OS X won't remove any of your user data, but I do recommend that you create a back up using Time Machine before you proceed. This website goes over how to back up using Time Machine:

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support

    Regards.

Without proper backups, you can loose data when upgrading. In the future make sure you backup.

What version of OS X were you running prior to upgrading to El Capitan?

Do you know what type account you had in Mail? Were they POP or IMAP?

Did you store messages locally under "On My Mac" folder?

Notes are difficult to restore. There have been several changes to where notes stored it's data. It sounds like Notes in El Capitan was unable to import your old notes. Without proper backup it's possible the original data has been deleted during the upgrade process.

Did you sync you notes with iCloud?  Have you logged into your iCloud account and checked to see if your notes are available online>

It sounds to me to be a permission issue possibly with the Notes App. Could have happened during the update.

Try opening Terminal and pasting this command and then press enter. You will see some scrolling lines and will let you know when it is done. It is usually fairly quick.

    diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u`

IT would probably be best to follow this article which will list the terminal command as well.

Follow from section 'Reset Permissions' on down.
