Dear DocEdP, Apple has taken over some of the driver updates for printers, scanners, etc, but not all. Occasionally some companies like Epson will update their drivers for printers, scanners, etc, and Apple will do it as well with, as you have seen, limited success. I think the trick is, here, not to choose software update automatically or go to the App store and look for printer software update. Just go to Epson's website and download their driver for Mavericks and leave it at that. Also resetting the printing system may help you. go to system preferences, then printers, then option-click on the plus or minus sign ( I forget which ) until you see
"reset printing system" then click on OK. Power cycling the printer may help too (unplug it for 30 sec, hit the power button, then plug it in and let it do its thing)
Any particular reason you're still on Mavericks, might I ask?
