Q: Music lost....

if you navigate using finder to where you placed the files are the mp3 or m4a or whatever files on your G drive ?

does it work if you drag one of them to your iTunes when it's open ?

did you follow the move iTunes lib to external drive guides ?

Have you opened iTunes Preferences and put in the location on the external HD? If not then iTunes doesn't know where the music is. Apple explains this in Manage and back up your iTunes media library - Apple Support

See also Make a split library portable. Did you copy over the entire iTunes folder? If so option start iTunes to connect to it? If you only copied over the media folder, but then deleted the iTunes folder from the Mac then you either need to restore a backup of the library files or start over with a new library, preferably laid out in the correct shape.
