Complete restore. Lost data.

I Had a problem with CONTACTS. After trying several things at the direction of a support rep. It was suggested to do a complete restore with ITunes. I did that and result is generally good. I lost several items in IBooks and an app (MAGIC PUZZLES) is acting strangely. My question is why can't IOS be replaced like normal version updates in a situation where problem is with built in apps Instead of a complete restore. Users should be aware that IBooks only retains items books obtained from ITunes.

iPad 2, iOS 5.1.1, Woks fine when I go home at night

If you had backed up your phone before restoring (which is something that Apple always suggests to do) you wouldn't have lost any files from iBooks.

I did the backup before doing the restore. You are wrong. I lost several pdfs. Only the items which originated from ITunes remain.

If you had all your data properly backed up, it's just a question of reloading it. Presumably, you have copies of the .pdfs on your computer. Reload them. They are not part of your iCloud back up.

If your data is important to you, you take steps to keep it safe. What I care about are my photos. They are backed up in iCloud, DropBox, and on my computer (and possibly one other cloud service).

OH me bad. Thinking that where Apple rep says "Make a backup and then do a restore" and mentioning that the backup in settings means partial backup.

An answer explaining why the Apple backup is not complete even after the data is lost would have been useful. A lecture on what I should have been doing is has no value at all. If you were a man, I suppose you would wear both suspenders and a belt.

You say that as if it's a bad thing. Yes, I believe in taking care of my important data. I don't trust anyone else to do it for me. I make a point of understanding the basics of how to do that long before something goes wrong so that, when I'm upset about my phone crashing, I don't also have to be worried about my data.

Are you actually saying that you don't have these important pdfs anywhere else?

You might want to take a look at this support document, which explains the differences between backups, and what content is backed up. About backups in iCloud and iTunes - Apple Support

This allows you to make an informed decision on which backup method you wish to use for your data. I will say though, that having data only residing on a mobile device, without having it backed up, or housed in a separate location is not a good idea, but then, you probably know that now.

If my device was to fail right now, or I had to restore it to factory, the most I could lose is a few photos and messages from the last 8 hours maximum.
