Q: does migration assistant overwrite apps on new computer?

I have migrated user accounts to a new mac from an old mac. I would like to migrate applications as well but do not want to overwrite existing applications on the new computer. How can I avoid this?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Usually if you migrate apps from a newer Mac to an older one, they will not run because the version is too new. Migration Assistant is meant for transferring data to a newer Mac. It would be best to re-download the apps you want on the older computer to get the correct version. If any of them are paid apps from third parties, they will have a license or serial number. Download them on the old mac and then enter that for registration. If you have paid apps from the Mac App Store, they will be under your purchased tab on the older Mac.

I'm sorry, I must've I misread your question. You should be able to use Migration Assistant just fine, and it will not overwrite your apps.
