Q: IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent taking up CPU

I need some help figuring out what to do with a process that has taken over the CPU. The computer is a brand new iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5 inch, Late 2015). 3.3 GHz Intel Core I7. Actually right now I have 3 computers with this same problem.

There is a process in Activity Monitor called IMRemoteURLConnection Agent that is taking up anywhere from 70 to 95% of the CPU. I have done a call with Apple already and first off they had never even heard of this process. After a while they figured it was related to Messages. They said it is constantly pinging the Cloud for contacts in Messages. They thought there might have been a bad golden image and had me create a new bootable disc with the latest version and install that on the computers. It doesn't help at all. It's still taking up all the CPU. There is nobody even logged into Messages. I've tried doing pram and safe boots which takes care of the issues for a few hours. Then it comes back. Has anybody had this problem and how can you fix it?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Did you reproduce the problem while running in safe mode?

I had not actually looked at it like that before. But the computer is in safe mode now and the agent is taking 77% of the CPU

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Hi,

    Open the Contacts App.

    Go to Preferences > Accounts.

If there are multiple options all trying to Sync the list then turn them all off except one.

If an iPhone or other devices use your iCloud ID then leave that one as the "On" one.

By default El Capitan seems to turn On all possible option in System Preferences > Internet accounts that might have an address book of sorts.

I have seen some people complain about iCloud and Facebook together.

I have had issues with iCloud, AIM (but with no Address Book), Google (again no contacts stored there either) Yahoo (Same).  The AIM issue spreads to several older Apple IDs that are not iCloud Linked that I use only in Messages (@Mac.com IDs for instance are also valid AIM screen Names)

So you logged out of your account, logged in as Guest, and without doing anything else, immediately you had excessive CPU usage by that process? You're quite sure of that? Strange, if true.

    That is correct.

I logged out of all accounts, logged in as guest. Immediately brought up Activity Monitor and IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent is taking up 95.5% of the CPU.

Nothing else has to be open for it take over. As soon as I log into any account be it a Standard account or an Administrator account it has taken over the computer.

I remoted into this computer so the screen capture would not show up in the monitor.

Ralph I think your suggestion of changing the Contacts preferences is on the right track. I changed them on my account and it did drop it to around the 60% range after a restart.

What is shown in the User column of Activity Monitor for that process? Does it change when you log in as Guest?

Please double-click the entry in the process table. In the inspection window that opens, select the tab marked Open Files and Ports. Post the text below.

You seem to be triggering a bug, but I don't know how. If possible, please connect to a different network with at least one of the affected machines and see whether there's any change.
